Kusadasi, which means "bird island", is set in a superb gulf in the Aegean region of Turkey and is known for its turquoise sparkling water of the Sea, broad sandy beaches, bright sun and large marina with a capacity for 600 boats. A glorious ancient city stands beside it, Ephesus with hundreds of thousands of visitors from tours each year. The town is not far from Adnan Menderes Airport, Izmir (only 80 km). Numerous holiday villages and hotels line its shores and hundreds of restaurants serves food from all around the world and, of course, Turkish Cuisine, which is one of the largest cuisines of the world. We mustn't forget discos, bars, cafes, pubs and "Turkish Nights"; all those to cater holiday-makers.Kusadasi has retained a certain earthiness to it and inexpensive meals and pensions can still be found in town. Many shops do a brisk trade with passengers from hundreds of cruise ships that dock for a day or two, allowing enough time for a trip to Ephesus and a shopping expedition. The early settlements in Kusadasi is by the Lelegians and Carians who moved from the central Anatolia around the year of 3000BC. They were the establishers of a colony on the skirts of Pilav Mountain in Kusadasi, and founded the cities Ania and Melia. Mild climate allowed the inhabitants to grow essential products such as olive, grape and figs for extracting oil or making wine and sweets on the fertile lands around the city.In the 10th century BC "12 Ionian Cities" Samos, Khios, Miletos, Priene, Ephesus, Teos, Erythrai, Priena, Klazonemi, Lebedos, Phokaia, Colophon, Smyrna, were established and reputed for the most developed cities of that age. Asthe annual meeting place of the Ionian League, Panionian, was founded around Kusadasi; the cities of Phygale, Marathesion and Neopolis were established within the borders of the city. During the period, the ports of Phygale and Neopolis were not busy and necessary, as they were close to the famous trading centers and ports, Miletos and Ephesus. The foundation of modern Kusadasi was first laid by the Venetians who established it as a colony in the 16th century. The Venetians and Genoases in the middle ages ruled Kusadasi, under the name of Scala Nova. In 1071, when the Malazgirt war broke, the Seljuk Turks started spreading in Anatolia and in 1304, when the Turkish principalities were forming, Sasa Bey was the authority of Kusadasi. Since Kusadasi was a harbor town, the Turks soon learnt maritime business and led a comfortable life. The town got attached to Seljuk Government in 1186 and almost after 200 years, the city became Ottoman. After the First World War, from the Ottoman Govt., Kusadasi went into the hands of the Italians, following a treaty. At this time, the town got filled with Turks, Greeks, Jews and Armenians, most of whom left Kusadasi after Turkey’s victory in the War of Independence led by Ataturk. Kusadasi is one of Turkey's most sophisticated holiday centers; a perfect place for vacation with its sandy beaches and glassy water. The contrast of the lively holiday life with the quietness of ancient ruins create the special atmosphere of the city. Kusadasi, one of Turkey's principle holiday resorts, offers an excellent environment for an unforgettable holiday. Situated on the west coast of Turkey- 90km south of Izmir, Kusadasi, is reputed for one of the most attractive city of the Aegean, as it is close to the important historical sites including Ephesus, Didyma, Priene, Miletos-the principals of ancient times, and ideal for sightseers.Kusadasi is located on the western Anatolia by the Aegean Coast 90 kilometers south of Izmir.
