Knidos archaic city that is on the end of Datça Peninsula, at the point where Aegean Sea and Mediterranean combine. One of the most
important among the Western Anatolia shore cities is situated on Tekir Cape.
It is on the borders of Yazi Village of Datça District, Mugla Province. It is connected to Datça via highway with a 35 km road -
the last 8 km of which are stabilized. Transportation via sea is made with excursion boats and yachts during the tourist season.
Knidos In the period during which the region was under the control of the Persians, approximately in 360 BC, Knidos people left their
city near Datça District and established a new Knidos city in Hippadamos plan at the farthest point of the peninsula. Apollo Temple,
which was the holy place of Rhodes state was there. Strabon (XIV 656, 2, 15) had written that this place had an appearance of "double
city" with both its land and island settlements. Knidos city, which was one of the important cities of the Rhodes Union and which
exported wine with its improved trade, was surrounded by a wall reinforced with round and cornered towers. It had two harbors, one
military and one commercial. The important Knidos buildings and areas in the city are: B, C, D and E Churches, Dor Temple, Propylon,
Apollo Temple and Altar, Round Temple and Altar,an assembly building, Korinth Temple, Sun Clock, Dor Stoa, a Theatre, Dionysus Temple
and Stoa, Slope Houses, Odeon, Demetre Holy Area, Necropolis and Kap Krio Peninsula.
The history of the city Knidos, whose excavation works had been carried out by Sir Charles T. Newton between the years 1856 - 1857
and by Prof. Dr. Iris Cornelia Love between the years 1967 - 1997, are being re - lighted with the scientific archaeological
excavations that had been carried out under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ramazan Özgan since 1987. The works are continuing in the
mainland on which the city is established and in Deve Boynu, which is Kap Krio Island.
The findings of the excavations show that the settlement goes back to the 14th and the 13th century BC. The condition of the city in
the 7th, the 6th and the 5th centuries was very good. The city, which has shown development in economic, cultural and artistic fields,
has opened a medical school and has shown itself on a scientific arena.
Situated at the tip of the Datca peninsular, where the Aegean meets the Eastern Mediterranean, Knidos was an important port as far
back as the 6th Century B.C. Originally Caryan, its strategic value saw to it that it was also, at various times, Greek, Persian,
Alexandrian and Roman.
Even in the 4th Century B.C., Knidos was a tourist attraction with people travelling hundreds of miles to visit the Temple of Aphrodite
and see Praxiletes' statue of The Goddess Surprised While Bathing. It was also famous for the quality of its wine, and as the
birthplace of Sostratus, who designed the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
The extensive ruins of the city run right down the hill to (and into) the harbour and, although there is little else here other than
the museum, a police post and a restaurant catering to visiting yachts, it is worth the trip if time allows. If there isn't time to
sail here, get a dolmus or taxi from Datca. The statue became famous for its beauty, meant to be appreciated from every angle, and for
being one of the first representations of a goddess completely nude. It depicted Aphrodite as she prepared for the ritual bath that
restored her virginity, discarding her drapery in her left hand, while modestly shielding her genitals with her right hand.
According to a possibly apocryphal account by Pliny, Praxiteles received a commission from the citizens of Kos for a statue of the
goddess Aphrodite. Praxiteles then created two versions one fully draped, and the other completely nude. The shocked citizens of
Kos rejected the nude statue and purchased the draped version. The design and appearance of the draped version is today unknown as
it didn't survive, nor did it appear to have merited attention, to judge from the lack of surviving accounts.
The rejected nude was purchased by some citizens of Knidos and set up in an open air temple that permitted viewing of the statue
from all sides. It quickly became one of the most famous works by Praxiteles for the bold depiction of Aphrodite as proudly and
erotically nude.
