The history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus or Halicarnassos goes back to the 13th century BC. Excavations reveal the
5000-year-old history of this town. Many civilisations found their home here. Carians for example, Homer tells in his Ilia,
that the Carians helped to defend Troya.A fishing village until the early 1970s, Bodrum is built on the ruins of ancient
Halicarnassus. It is now Turkey’s liveliest resort, attracting poets, singers, artists and package tourists. Its perfect
harbour was colonized by ancient Greeks in the 11th century BC and the city later flourished under Persian rule. It was
nominally the capital city of the satrapy of Caria; its location ensured the city enjoyed considerable autonomy.Heredotus,
known as the father of history, was born in Bodrum in 484 BC. - and he said that Bodrum had been founded by the Dorians.
The next settlers were Carians and Lelegians. In the 6th. Century BC. the region came under Persian rule. Its most brilliant
period was around 353. BC. when it was the capital of the Satrap of Caria (In this century it was famous for its trade, sailing
and boatbuilding.) Artemisia who was a warrior-woman played a significant role in the protection of the Asian Union and she
achieved fame by adopting a stance against Rhodes as the Admiral of the Carian fleet in 480 BC. We know that the native people,
namely the Lelegs and the Carians had lived on the hills in the Peninsula of Bodrum. In the year 1000 B.C., those who came here
along with the Doric migrations settled in the locality where the fortress stands today and mixed with the native people here.
So, the city of Halicarnassos was founded.Opposite the Greek island of Kos, on a stupendous peninsula in the Southern Aegean
rises the city of Bodrum, Halicarnassus in ancient times, the Carian capital and native city of the historian Herodotus.
Bodrum is similar in air and color to parts of Southern Italy with oddly-shaped whitewashed houses filled with flowers, mostly
purple and fuchsia-colored bougainvilleas, oleanders and prickly pears. The city has plenty of shops selling almost everything
and there are numerous restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and cafes along the shore. Street vendors ply marine sponges, oranges and
mandarins. Bodrum has been called the St. Tropez of Turkey, for its translucent sea, numerous bays and small ports. The city has
barely 25.000 inhabitants who during the winter live off fishing, sponge collecting, boat building and agriculture. The famous
wooden boats called caiques are made here.
