About Egypt
Background
to Egypt
The regularity and richness of the annual Nile River flood, coupled with
semi-isolation provided by deserts to the east and west, allowed for the
development of one of the world's great civilizations. A unified kingdom
arose circa 3200 B.C. and a series of dynasties ruled in Egypt
for the next three millennia. The last native dynasty fell to the Persians
in 341 B.C., who in turn were replaced by the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines.
It was the Arabs who introduced Islam
and the Arabic language in the 7th century and who ruled for the next six
centuries.
A local military caste, the Mamluks
took control about 1250 and continued to govern after the conquest of Egypt
by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. Following the completion of the Suez Canal
in 1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub, but also fell
heavily into debt. Ostensibly to protect its investments, Britain seized
control of Egypt's government in 1882, but nominal allegiance to the Ottoman
Empire continued until 1914. Partially independent from the UK in 1922,
Egypt acquired full sovereignty following World War II.
The completion of the Aswan
High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake
Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile River in the
agriculture and ecology of Egypt. A rapidly growing population (the largest
in the Arab world), limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all
continue to overtax resources and stress society. The government has struggled
to ready the economy for the new millennium through economic reform and
massive investment in communications and physical infrastructure.
Cairo - Egypts Capital City.
Cairo - the Triumphant City - is the glorious capital of Egypt, the cradle
of civilization and the beacon of religion. It is the largest city in the
Middle East and Africa and lies at the centre of all routes that lead to
and from Asia, Africa and Europe.
Cairo was founded
on July 16, 969 AD by the Fatimid leader Jawhar Al-Sequilli, by an order
from the Fatimid Khalif Al-Mo'iz lideenellah. It was named "the city
of the 1000 minarets.
Cairo is Africa's most populous city and the Arab world's cultural center.
People from all over the world visit Cairo to see the monuments and artifacts
of ancient Egypt as well as the various aspects of modern Cairo.
Cairo provides its visitors with great cultural destinations which include
a vast amount of art galleries, music halls, cultural centers etc…
Cairo also offers its visitors with great accommodation, restaurants, and
various leisure activities and shopping. In Cairo there is something for
everyone. Tourists can enjoy Khan El Khalili Bazaar while shopping for antiques,
rugs, copper and many other oriental gifts; while others may enjoy shopping
for the latest fashion trends in one of Cairo magnificent malls.
Cairo is the city where past and present meet. On its east side stands the
evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian Coptic, and Jewish culture
still flourishing till this day. On its west side lays the Ancient Egyptian
city of Memphis (Giza), the renowned capital of the Old Kingdom and the
site of the Pyramids. Indeed, a journey through Cairo is a journey through
time, a journey through the history of an immortal civilization.
The River Nile
"Egypt is the gift of the River
Nile", said Herodotus, the great Greek historian, on his only visit
to Egypt. There is no better way to trace the course of Egyptian history
than to follow the course of the Nile. The river has been Egypt's lifeline
for millenniums, fertilizing the narrow strip of land along its bank with
a deposit of silt after each annual inundation - now controlled by the High
Dam at Aswan. Along its length Pharaohs, nobles and lesser mortals have
all built monuments and tombs to immortalize themselves.
The Nile can be divided into three zones:
The tributaries, the many rivers that make up the stream of the Nile. The
White and Blue Niles join near Khartoum in Sudan and other tributaries join
the White Nile further south. The second zone is the stretch between Cairo
and Khartoum. The third and last zone is the delta, where the Nile divides
into several branches, of which Rosetta (Rashid) and Damietta ( Dumyat)
are the main ones. The Nile Delta is the widest habitable area of the Nile,
and it even includes several lakes, like Manzala, Buruillus and Edku.
Modern times have added more division lines and two dams at Aswan. South
of these dams the river valley opens up, allowing rich agriculture and high
population density. The width of the Nile below Aswan is 2.8 km in average.
The greatest width is at Edfu, with 7.5 km, the smallest at Silwa Gorge,
near Aswan, with 350 metres.
The High Dam
The High Dam symbolizes the strong will and great determination of the Egyptian
people. The dam protects them against the annual River Nile flood. It also
saves the excess water that is used when needed, to spare the population
from suffering a drought. The High Dam is the most important project that
Egyptians have implemented for Nile water management. In fact, it is a landmark
in their history. This eminent dam positively affects various areas such
as irrigation, agriculture and power generation. Hundreds of feddans are
now continuously irrigated instead of using the basin system, and more than
a million feddans are now reclaimed. Moreover, electrical power is generated
on daily basis.
About 83 % of the total water of the Nile comes from Lake
Tana, 1,800 metres above sea level in the Ethiopian mountains. The lake
overflows every summer causing a flood that is controlled today by the barrages
of Sudan and southern Egypt .
This water flows through the Blue Nile until it joins the White Nile at
Khartoum to form the
Nile. The other main source is the White Nile originating in Uganda and
Burundi. It contributes with 16%, but this is a more steady flow.
Without it, the River Nile would run dry in May. As there are many single
contributors to the White Nile, it is a question of definition on where
the Nile really starts.
The longest stretch of the Nile comes with the start of the Kyaka River
in Burundi. This passage goes through Lake Victoria, then through the Victoria
Nile, Lake Albert, and the Albert Nile, which is also called the Mountain
Nile in Sudan . The Mountain Nile joins other rivers flowing from Sudan
to form the White Nile.
The third contributor is the River Atbara, which joins the main course of
the Nile 300 km north of Khartoum. Atbara River contributes with less than
1%, and runs dry at times of the year.
The Nile carries water all through the year, but the amount of water it
carries, varies depending on the season. The Nile ends at the Nile
Delta, which is also considered as the most fertile place in Egypt.
The Suez Canal
Thanks to its geographical location, the Suez
Canal is universally acknowledged as the shortest maritime route between
east and west. The canal has contributed to the promotion of international
seaborne trade movement between countries both to the north and south of
the canal, particularly those overlooking the Mediterranean and the Red
Sea.
The Canal projects are designed to attract super-tankers and enhance international
trade movement. In order to maintain the competitive advantage of the services
rendered by this international maritime channel, the development of this
facility is focused on upgrading the maritime course by deepening the draft
from 58 feet to 68 feet, to allow super-vessels with loads up to 300,000
tons or a net tonnage of more than 500,000 tons to pass freely. A favorable
and flexible tariff policy was adopted to attract international trade movement
through the canal.
Available maritime services and facilities were upgraded, with emphasis
on the level of performance, service and security of navigation through
the canal, due to the fact that it is an international waterway that facilitates
and contributes to the promotion of world trade.
More intensive efforts were exerted to make good use of the canal's unique
location in terms of trade, industry, tourism and media, by building firm
relationships between east and west.
